History of Fitzrovia

The Fitzroy Tavern, located on Charlotte Street, was the inspiration for the name ‘Fitzrovia’ in the 1930s. This area is a unique location as its quirky narrow and irregular streets, as a result of being developed by self-contained landowners, set it apart from its wider neighbouring districts. In its early days, the area was mostly known for its craft workshops and popularity with tradesmen; even today the area still embraces its creative heritage as it happens to be home to wholesalers and the headquarters of giants in the fashion industry, such as the Arcadia Group. In 1973, the popularity of the area began to grow and became a household name with the introduction of the Fitzrovia Festival, which is still loved by the public today.

Places of Interest

Food and Drink

Fitzrovia is bursting with bars and restaurants; temptation is at every turn as they all beckon you to order a cocktail and browse their mouth-watering menus. For a seaside dining experience in the heart of the city, The Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack is truly heavenly; a small and cosy restaurant that is full of character and flavour, and boasts the best of British produce. The Riding House Café is another popular destination in Fitzrovia because of its friendly and retro vibe; an all-day brasserie that serves everything from breakfast, to Sunday lunch, to cocktails, of course it is all delicious too. If champagne and caviar is not your thing, then maybe champagne and hotdogs might be? Bubbledogs is the home of gourmet hotdogs which you can make as plain or as indulgent as you like, washed down with the finest champagne; savour this unexpected match. For some traditional Italian cuisine in an intimate, cosy setting, head to the oh-so-romantic Circolo Popolare - Big Mamma Group’s latest offering.

As well as good food, Fitzrovia offers a wide variety of elegant and entertaining venues for having some drinks with friends. London Cocktail Club is a great basement bar in the area which has a trendy atmosphere with inventive cocktails and Chinawhite is the place for partygoers who are looking for an evening with some serious pizzazz. As well as offering exquisite Japanese robatayaki cuisine, ROKA also offers the Shochu Lounge which has an alluring menu of impressive contemporary Japanese cocktails.

Entertainment and Culture

There are a number of venues in Fitzrovia that offer excellent entertainment and add to the area’s originality. Pollock’s Toy Museum is a wondrous place to enjoy with the family, or even to release the inner child in you; walk the magical winding staircase and discover a variety of different toys from all over the world, such as century-old bears and dollhouses, or watch a live toy performance.

From live toy performances to musicals, the Dominion Theatre has a solid reputation for good reason as it was once home to the famous musical ‘We Will Rock You’ which had a hugely successful run of 12 years.

To get those creative juices flowing even more, The Building Centre offers an impressive array of everything architectural and design based, past exhibitions have focused on brickwork and urban landscaping.

Shopping

Fitzrovia is on Oxford Street’s doorstep so all of your shopping needs will be catered for with shops such as; Zara, Topshop, Reiss and of course Selfridges is only a short walk away. Planet Organic, not far from Goodge Street Underground station, is a health food store that is becoming increasingly popular; stroll down the aisles and discover healthy and organic snacks and food that taste delicious without the guilt.
