With 32 London boroughs, competing for the crown of ‘arts and culture capital’ can be a challenge, but one borough, in particular - Wandsworth - is standing out from the crowd in the wake of an exciting, extensive new project.

The Regeneration of Ram Brewery

Wandsworth is on the way to becoming South-West London’s ‘art and culture capital’ following the announcement of a £12m project surrounding the Ram Brewery.

Originally the home of Young’s - the brewery which later became one of Britain’s most popular pub chains - Wandsworth is set to see a new wave of regeneration, taking this South-West London Borough’s status to new heights in terms of culture, transport and aesthetics, attracting new residents and providing new opportunities for existing residents.

The area’s heritage will remain a paramount feature of the new public quarter, with plans to reintroduce the harvest festival to Wandsworth, which was once a famous market town. A new microbrewery will also be created - thereby upholding the Ram Brewery’s accolade as the ‘oldest British brewery in continuous operation’ - as well as a museum dedicated to its history.

Whilst Wandsworth sits just south of the River Thames, the Borough also has the River Wandle running through its centre. In addition to massive urban regeneration, Wandsworth Council has also commissioned work to reform the river’s passage, whilst refreshing the riverside with newly planted flora and fauna. Once completed, residents and visitors will, for the first time, be able to walk the full stretch of the River Wandle. What’s more, a new line of restaurants is set to be introduced along the riverside, creating an inviting public space that will incorporate the environment’s natural beauty with cosmopolitan life.

Regarding these new projects, Leader of Wandsworth Council Ravi Govindia has said: “It’s excellent news that the rich history of the site will be reflected in this cultural plan and that our thriving arts community is fully involved in creating a new cultural hub for the town, which all our residents can enjoy.”
