History of Deptford
Deptford has a colourful and vibrant history spanning the Elizabethan period and bearing witness to a number of rebellions and rulers. In 1497, the Battle of Deptford Bridge took place across the creek where the King’s forces soundly beat down the Cornwall rebels. In April 1581, Queen Elizabeth I visited the docks in order to honourably knight Sir Francis Drake for his contribution to exploration and trade, though his worthiness has been contested as his links to piracy became more prominent. Notably, Tsar Peter the Great of Russia lived undercover in Deptford whilst learning the art of shipbuilding during his 17th century rule of Russia.

Historical
Located over Deptford Creek, two railway bridges are still standing in front of a Victorian sewage station which has ensured that the Thames has been consistently considered as the cleanest river in all of Europe. The brick railway viaduct is the oldest known rail line in London, originally travelling from London Bridge to Greenwich. As part of the Deptford Project, the renovation and extension of the Victorian carriage ramp, a Grade II listed structure and one of the oldest surviving within London, has given the area a much-needed remodel.

The Albany Theatre
With its roots steeped in history and charity, The Albany Theatre is a community arts centre in the heart of Deptford that hosts year-round events and offers a space for new, creative talent.
