Jerry Laio, a 27-year-old PHD student, is the envy of all his friends, having recently moved into a new apartment at Timber Yard – Galliard Homes’ and Apsley House Capital’s new development in Southside, Birmingham.
Originally from China, Jerry is studying art and design at Birmingham City University. He previously lived in rented accommodation but decided to put down roots by buying a home of his own.
Having lived in Birmingham for several years, Jerry knows the city well, especially the Southside district, which is home to a large Chinese community.
But while the convenience of having an array of bars, restaurants and nightclubs on the doorstep was a factor in Jerry’s decision-making process, it was the size, layout and build quality of the apartments at Timber Yard that really sold it for him.
“I like having friends around, cooking and watching movies, which is why the layout and size of the apartment were so important. The proportions and quality of the finish is so much better at Timber Yard, compared to other developments I’ve seen.
“The on-site amenities are great too. My friends are really impressed with the building, particularly the gym and cinema room. A few of them are trying to buy their own apartment here they like it so much.”

“I like interior design, but there are limits to what you can do in rented accommodation. Through the décor and furnishings, I’ve made the apartment feel like home; it’s a reflection of me and my personality.”
Covid-19 meant Jerry had to wait a little longer than normal to move into his apartment, but he was kept in the loop throughout the buying process, with regular updates on the status of his completion date.
He said: “Despite having to do most of the correspondence via email, the whole process was simple and straight forward. Galliard’s completion team was really helpful, especially Constance, who was very reassuring and kept me up to date with how the sale was going.
“The on-site building management team are brilliant too and are always friendly and happy to help. It’s a great place to live and I would 100 per cent recommend it to anyone looking to buy an apartment in Birmingham city centre.”
